64 pp., clean paper covers showing sl. wear at corners, internally tight. Published just before decimalisation, the price list for 'other titles in this series' (inside back cover) is still given in shillings and pence, though the small circular Shire price sticker on the front cover gives the price in new pence (with the old SD price in brackets). Shire had a knack for publishing compact yet informative books on social and regional history and vernacular architecture, plus a few oddities which presumably were the personal interest of the commissioning editor such as 'The Wines of Madeira'. This volume is illustrated by 16 pages of monochrome photographs.
