Nearly new. A history of Liverpool's oldest Literary and Scientific Institution, founded in 1797 by William Roscoe and his associates and endowed with a very fine private library. With a membership limited to 500 'shareholders' (full members), and equipped with facilities for fine dining and lectures, the club has reinvented itself over the years (and relocated to new premises in 1928) without losing its essentially Georgian character. Chapter nine gives potted biographies of 'some proprietors of note' - William Roscoe, James Currie and John Rutter (founders), Antonio Panizzi, Sir James Picton and Sir Ronald Ross among others. (13), 81 pp., ill.
