5 Tythacott, Louise The lives of Chinese objects: Buddhism, Imperialism and Display
Berghahn Books, New York 2011 085745238X / 9780857452382 1st edition Pictorial hard covers New No Jacket
A thoroughly-researched study of a group of objects captured from a Chinese Buddhist shrine and brought to Britain to be exhibited at the Great Exhibition before falling into disrepair and neglect in a Liverpool Museum warehouse. The rediscovery of the provenance of these sculptures followed their conservation and redisplay in the new World Cultures gallery, and highlighted the diversity of incorrect interpretations arrived at by various “experts”, some of whom attributed the pieces to Japan. This is a case study in the consequences that flow from incomplete documentation of museum objects and the impact of wars and relocation, as well as highlighting the extraordinary sophistication of collectors like Joseph Mayer and impresarios of Oriental culture like John Forbes Royle. xi, 275 pp.
