10 King, Ronald Royal Kew
Constable 1985 0 09 466240 1 / 9780094662407 Hard covers, dust jacket V.g. V.g.
Claiming to be the first book devoted solely to the intriguing history of Kew, this rather pedestrian account was written by a former secretary and civil servant. A flavour of its sycophantic royalism can be gauged by this quotation from chapter 17: It therefore ceased from that time to be 'Royal' Kew in its full sense as a personal property of the monarch, but the glamour of interest of royalty remained as, instead of that intimate relationship, it now took on the wider role of serving the countries of the Empire over which the descendent of its founder reigned as Empress.

12 Minter, Sue The greatest glass house: the rainforests recreated
HMSO, in conjunction with the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew 1990 0 11 250035 8 / 9780112500353 1st edition Hard covers, dust jacket V.g. V.g.
The book was partly inspired by a project to reconstruct the famous Victorian structure, Richard Turner's Palm House at Kew. It covers the history of the building as well as describing its modern features, including a marine aquarium in the basement. Although half the book consists of a survey of the botanical contents of the palm house, making it of particular interest to readers with an interest in horticulture, a considerable part is devoted to the engineering challenges posed by the very adventurous method of construction (including wrought iron glazing bars). The principal author, then the supervisor of horticulture in the Palm House, went on to become Curator of Chelsea Physic Garden and subsequently at the Eden Project, Cornwall.

Primarily written for lovers of Edward Bawdens wry humorous style of drawing, though personally I would have preferred to see him illustrating Wilfrid Blunts whimsical _In for a Pennyî rather than the fantastical _Adam and Evelynî from which many of the illustrations are taken. 128 pp., jacket design reproduced on main boards.

19 Turrill, W.B. Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew: past and present
Herbert Jenkins 1959 Hard covers, dust jacket V.g. V.g.
Jacket price-clipped, otherwise intact. An insider's history of Kew Gardens, from its pre-Royal origins to its postwar flowering as a scientific and horticultural research station. The author was keeper of the herbarium and library at Kew; prior to Ray Desmond's recent history this was the best-balanced account of the development of the Royal Botanic Gardens. Other histories, such as the unfortunately named Hookers of Kew (unexpectedly popular with American buyers) have tended towards the sycophantic; Turrill concentrates on the changing functions of the garden and the growing importance of its herbarium, library and research labs.
