Fine. Alphabetically arranged by their English names, this book romps through the attributes of many plants with folk traditions, devoting considerable space to certain species such as Elder (Sambucus nigra). Illustrated with numerous small text figures. The author, who also wrote a book on topiary for Shire, has a nice way with words.

20 Baker, Margaret Discovering topiary: the history and cultivation of clipped hedges and trees
Shire Publications, Tring 1969 0 85263 019 0 / 9780852630198 1st edition Paper covers V.g. No Jacket
64 pp., clean paper covers showing sl. wear at corners, internally tight. Published just before decimalisation, the price list for 'other titles in this series' (inside back cover) is still given in shillings and pence, though the small circular Shire price sticker on the front cover gives the price in new pence (with the old £SD price in brackets). Shire had a knack for publishing compact yet informative books on social and regional history and vernacular architecture, plus a few oddities which presumably were the personal interest of the commissioning editor such as 'The Wines of Madeira'. This volume is illustrated by 16 pages of monochrome photographs.
